Transit agencies deal with Segways
By Kiet DoAs gas prices continue to be at record levels, Segway dealers in the Bay Area are seeing increased sales. While their appeal is growing among commuters, mass transit agencies are trying to deal with the battery-operated scooters.
BART has imposed a temporary ban, after a Segway rider lost control and ended up on the tracks at a San Francisco station last week. Caltrain, Muni and other transit agencies have similar bans in place.
In spite of these growing pains, one Bay Area dealer said his sales have tripled over the last three months. There are currently about 3,000 Segways in the Bay Area.
