Bay bridge will close
By StaffFinal preparations are being done for tonight's big closure of the lower deck of the Bay Bridge which will be closed to traffic the entire Labor Day weekend.
KCBS reporter Holly Quan said the heavy equipment is being staged on Bryant Street as Caltrans counts down to tonight's 11:59 p.m. complete closure of the lower deck of the span.
Demolition work will be going on all day Saturday, Sunday and Monday with the westbound lanes remaining open.
Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney knows it's human nature to wait until the last second to make it across but "you know I would not cut it that close. If you are a motorist, do not cut it into the last hour. Our crews, it takes them a few minutes to get out there and close off the lanes and they may close the lanes a few minutes early but if you are into 11:30 of that hour, I wouldn't try to cross the lower deck of the Bay Bridge."
Not only will the lower deck be closed, the upper deck flow will likely be slower, especially on Saturday because of rubbernecking at the demolition.
