BART increasing trains to ColmaBy Erin Sherbert
BART will change all train departure and arrival times and eliminate weekday timed transfers on the Richmond-Fremont line as part of a schedule overhaul that takes effect Monday.
The changes are being made to prepare for the extension of service to San Francisco International Airport in January.
Nearly all departure and arrival times will change by no more than three minutes except on the Dublin/Pleasanton line, where the difference will be as much as six minutes.
The schedule change will eliminate weekday timed transfers on the Richmond line from Fremont-bound trains to San Francisco-bound trains at MacArthur Station. BART officials advise San Francisco-bound passengers to wait for a direct train at their originating station.
"Our rule of thumb has always been, 'Jump on the first train and transfer at MacArthur,' " said BART spokesman Ron Rodriguez. "Now we're advising people going to San Francisco to wait for a direct train."
Timed transfers will still be scheduled at 12th Street and MacArthur stations on evenings and Sundays when direct service is not offered. To make up for the loss of the other timed transfers, BART will run longer direct trains on the Richmond-San Francisco/Daly City line.
The new schedule will increase the number of trains that go to Colma, as all runs from Dublin/Pleasanton will end up there. Preliminary plans call for the Dublin/Pleasanton line to provide the only direct service to SFO, but BART directors have not made a final decision.
Other changes include starting extra rush-hour trains on the Pittsburg/Bay Point-San Francisco line at North Concord/Martinez instead of Pleasant Hill, and starting 15-minute service an hour earlier on the Dublin/Pleasanton-Colma line. It now starts at 5 a.m.
The new schedules are available at BART stations or online at www.bart.gov. BART information is also available by phone at (510) 465-2278 from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays and Saturday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays.
