In February 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which would eventually help send 120,000 persons of Japanese descent to U.S. concentration camps during World War II. For nearly 8,000 San Francisco Bay Area Japanese Americans, who were first evacuated to Tanforan Racetrack in San Bruno, this journey marked the beginning of a several years-long revocation of their civil rights.

Jet-lagged but happy, 14 San Bruno residents returned home Sunday afternoon from eight days in Narita, Japan, where they experienced a cultural immersion that included a kendo martial arts class, a karaoke club, a tea ceremony and a chance to pull a poppy float in the annual Gion festival parade.

In October of 1990, Narita, Japan became San Bruno's sister city. The relationship between the two cities started in 1982 between the Rotary Clubs of the two cities. Since then the relationship between San Bruno and Narita has flourished. Narita is a suburb of Tokyo, and the home of Narita Airport, which handles as many as 20 million passengers annually, making it one of the busiest airports in the world. The town itself lies between the Tone River and Tokyo Bay in the Chiba Prefecture.
