As the Fourth of July approaches, we should remember that less than a week ago, Bay Area residents were coughing and sneezing through some of the worst smoky air on record. The thought of firefighters battling more than 1,000 blazes in California at one time, and the dry brown hills surrounding a region plagued by one of the worst droughts in history, makes us nervous about so-called "safe and sane" fireworks and those who are lighting them.
