Congressman John Garamendi (D-Walnut Creek, CA), the only member of Congress from Northern California on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, today sent a letter to Transportation & Infrastructure Committee Chairman Jim Oberstar (D-Minnesota) requesting a field hearing in the Bay Area on the causes of the San Bruno pipeline explosion and strategies to prevent future preventable disasters. Garamendi announced the submission of the letter at a Transportation & Infrastructure Committee hearing on pipeline safety.

The planes lifted off from the runways designated 2-8 Left or 2-8 Right at San Francisco International Airport, and at that time of day -- shortly after 6:15 p.m. Thursday -- the setting sun filled the aircrafts' windscreens. As the two commercial flights climbed over San Bruno's brawny shoulders, the pilots were the first to see the hills below and realize that something terrible had happened.
