Durand: Is it time yet?
Michelle Durand - 09/16/2010
Is it time yet? Time to laugh, to smile, to think even ever so briefly about something other than the six-alarm blaze that forever changed San Bruno? Is it time to take a deep breath and then another and slowly let the rest of the world creep back into daily existence?

Journal: Emphasis should be on facts, not fear
Editorial Board - 09/15/2010
The peaceful calm of a normal day was shattered within moments Thursday as the calamity brought forth from a ruptured gas line forever changed the lives of those in a San Bruno neighborhood. The physical, psychological and emotional steps needed to rebuild are steep, but they are ones that each individual must take with the support of loved ones and the community at large, which is now tighter than ever before. But they are steps largely taken alone once the attention wanes and the assistance tents fold up. For many who have lost everything - including loved ones and their homes - no amount of money, assistance or support will make those steps easier. But those are the steps that must be taken. Along the entire way, our thoughts should remain with the victims.

Durand: Disasters don't happen here
Michelle Durand - 09/14/2010
Disasters happen in other states, other countries, the other end of the television news channel. Disasters are wildfires in Southern California and annual hurricanes in the Caribbean and earthquakes in seismically questionable Third World countries. There are floods in North Korea, tsunamis in Thailand, school campus shootings in Virginia, terrorist attacks in New York City.

Holdeman: San Bruno inferno
Eric Holdeman - 09/12/2010
The gas fired inferno that was created in San Bruno is another reminder of what failed infrastructure can do. While the cause is not yet known, the two things that come to my mind are "backhoe" and "older infrastructure." In this case it could be both.
