Setting the Way-back machine to 1995, we find the San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury's analysis describing BART to the airport. They concluded (as did a Santa Clara County Grand Jury nine years later) that BART was an extremely expensive alternative with little benefit to the county and would consume valuable transit dollars. Worse they cited SamTrans "nebulous" funding plans and reliance on ridership figures.

The original BART to the San Francisco Airport (SFO) concocted in 1991 planned to have a joint BART/CalTrain station at San Bruno. At this multi-modal station, one could change between BART, CalTrain and the Airport light rail system now called AirTrain. BART changed this to a new multi-modal station at Millbrae, where BART would run a special connector from Millbrae (and collect fees), divert passengers from CalTrain into San Francisco and generally make a lot of money.

One recent Saturday afternoon, Bob Gorran was showing a visitor around the new Millbrae Train Museum, located in the old Caltrain depot a few hundred feet south of the BART/Caltrain station. Gorran, 81, wore a 20-year- old orange-and-white Southern Pacific Railroad baseball cap that was held together in the back with silver duct tape. It was his first day as a museum docent, but he had paid his way through UC Berkeley by working on trains. "I know trains," he said. "I know train history; I'm old enough, believe me!"
Power line drops in protected habitat

A 115,000-volt power line fell in an endangered species habitat between Highway 101 and the Millbrae BART station Wednesday morning, knocking out electricity to 25,000 customers -- nearly half of whom were without power for more than four hours.
