$6.6 million more voted for SF jail
By Wyatt Buchanan

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved $6.6 million in additional funds Tuesday to cover the costs of jailing a growing inmate population.

The supervisors approved the money on a 9-1 vote, with Board President Aaron Peskin voting no. Supervisor Jake McGoldrick was absent from the meeting.

Sheriff Michael Hennessey, who runs jail operations, told a committee of supervisors last week that the money is needed because of a court ruling in Southern California that mandated that every inmate have a bed. The ruling forced Hennessey to open and staff a jail in San Bruno that he planned to keep closed, the sheriff said.

Hennessey believes another contributing factor in the rising jail population is inmates being kept longer than they should be while awaiting adjudication of their cases.
