Aimco aims at trimming Treetops
By John Horgan
They stand like sad, decaying sentinels at the intersection of Skyline Boulevard and Sharp Park Road near the San Bruno-Pacifica border.
The defunct Treetops Apartments sit there empty, deteriorating with each passing day. They are a community eyesore that begs to be addressed.
The 308-unit complex, which opened in 1985, has been vacant and fenced-off for just over two years as a developer, Aimco, contemplates how - and when - to begin rebuilding it.
The current real estate and credit environment has not been kind to the process. A zoning change has been requested to create a total of 510 rental units on the site.
Approval from the San Bruno Planning Commission would be a first step in the long road to getting something done on the property. It is anticipated that a proposal to deal with the zoning issue will be brought to the commission sometime this summer.
There has been concern that the project could worsen traffic on Susan Drive.
But the continuing presence of such a large, unattractive group of nondescript buildings represents a depressing blight for its neighbors. In fact, the structures have been purposely damaged, in some cases, because they have been used as practice fodder for public safety entities.
San Bruno authorities have expressed some frustration with the slow pace of change. They realize it's time to rehabilitate those grim edifices.
Attempts to contact a representative for Aimco were unsuccessful. |
