Men held in beating of motel manager
By John Coté

Two Sacramento men face attempted murder and aggravated mayhem charges in the brutal beating last weekend of a 65-year-old San Bruno motel manager who had asked the two guests to quiet down, prosecutors said.

Vutoro Mualevu, 28, and Isei Tikoisuva, 21, are being held without bail in San Mateo County jail after being arraigned Tuesday. They were part of a rowdy, drunken party at the Regency Inn on Saturday when other guests complained about the noise, authorities said. When the night manager, whom prosecutors described as a "balding, grandfatherly looking man," asked the partygoers to quiet down, he was attacked, authorities said.

Either Mualevu or Tikoisuva smashed a beer bottle in the manager's face and then the two men proceeded to stomp him as he lay on the ground, prosecutors said.

The manager, whose name was not released, is in critical condition and on a ventilator with numerous bone fractures, possible skull fractures and other injuries. Authorities feared he might die from his injuries, prosecutors said.

"They basically crushed his face," San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. "If he does survive, he's going to need multiple surgeries."
