Caltrain kills pedestrian near Atherton
By Josh Molina

A pedestrian was killed by a Caltrain Sunday night, halting traffic just north of the Atherton station, Caltrain officials said.

Trains in both directions were stopped while emergency crews responded to the 7:05 p.m. accident. The northbound tracks were reopened by 7:40 p.m. Southbound train tracks were opened at 8:08 p.m.

For updates on delays, call the Caltrain Customer Service line at (800) 660-4287.

The victim was not immediately identified.

Earlier in the day, at 3:43 p.m., a Union Pacific train hit a pedestrian in Gilroy, just south of Leavesley Road.

The pedestrian, who was not identified, was sitting on a railroad tie at the edge of the track, according to the Gilroy Police Department, when the train's cow guard hit the person in the chest.

The victim, who was expected to live, was wearing headphones, police said, and didn't hear the train blow its whistle.
