  Caltrain will begin installing more than a mile of fencing at strategic locations between San Francisco and San Jose next month to discourage trespassing on the tracks, according to the train service.

  The largest single installation, 2,800 feet, in this $500,000 safety project, will be in Sunnyvale along Hendy Avenue. In San Francisco, crews will install more than 450 feet of fencing along Pennsylvania Avenue and 600 feet along Gould Avenue. They also will place some 900 feet of fencing over eight locations in Redwood City. Another 1,500 feet of fencing will be installed in Menlo Park and Atherton, while another 800 feet will be installed over seven locations in San Jose.

  The locations were selected based on a number of factors including the incidence of trespassing by pedestrians and the opportunity to "close" gaps in existing fencing. Caltrain also sought recommendations from locomotive engineers, transit police and cities along the rail corridor.

  When the project is completed, Caltrain will have a fence along at least one side of its track between San Francisco and San Jose. This will close the most common trespassing routes across Caltrain's property.
