Accidents at both ends of the line slow Caltrain
By Staff

Caltrain is experiencing significant delays this afternoon due to accidents on the tracks in San Francisco and San Jose.

A fatality on the tracks north of the College Park station in San Jose has slowed service in that area, while in San Francisco, a partially derailed freight train near Paul Avenue is forcing single-tracking" in that area, according to Caltrain spokesman Jonah Weinberg. No one was hurt, but trains into and out of San Francisco are being delayed. The fatality at the south end involved a male pedestrian reportedly struck by an Amtrak train.

Weinberg said the delays on Caltrain are 30 to 60 minutes, with the more serious delays near the scenes of the accidents. He said the single-tracking in San Francisco would continue until about 8 p.m., and that Caltrain service wouldn't completely return to a normal schedule until later in the evening.

As to alternatives, Weinberg said SamTrans, which serves most Caltrain stations, is honoring Caltrain passes and tickets during the service disruption. BART is also honoring Caltrain tickets and passes between San Francisco and Millbrae.
