Construction to disrupt Union City BART
By David Goll
A major redevelopment project around the Union City BART station will mean parking areas and bus stops will have to be temporarily relocated.
The redesigned area around the BART station should provide improved access for cars, buses, pedestrians and bicycles.
Work on the project will begin April 28. Beginning that day, the central parking lot will be closed for construction. Access in and out of the south parking lot and north-reserved lot will be from Union Square Boulevard.
There will also be temporary parking lots along 11th Street.
Buses entering the station area will now enter from Decoto Road and exit onto Union Square Boulevard.
When the first phase of the redevelopment project is complete in 2010, a transit village surrounding the BART station will have 1,000 housing units, along with retail and office space.
Union City is one of 43 stations operated by the Bay Area Rapid Transit District based in Oakland, which runs commuter trains service along 105 miles of track in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco and San Mateo counties.
