BART thanks passengers in Earthy fashion
By David Goll
To reward its passengers for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 500,000 tons annually by leaving their cars behind and taking the train, BART will offer giveaways worth $500,000 in value on April 22, Earth Day.
The first 50,000 passengers who pass through six Bay Area Rapid Transit District stations between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. -- including those in downtown Berkeley and Oakland City Center/12th Street -- will receive coupons to buy organic and fair trade products from Tully's Coffee.
BART officials said no taxpayer funds are being used for the event. This is the second of four "rider thank you" events scheduled this year by BART that are being paid for by a $2 million donation from Tully's Coffee Corp. Tully's is a Seattle-based gourmet coffee purveyor that had more than $60 million in sales during fiscal 2007 and operates more than 130 retail stores in seven western states and Japan.
Tully's has four East Bay stores -- two in Oakland and one each in Berkeley and Pleasanton.
BART, based in Oakland, operates 105 miles of track and has 43 stations in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco and San Mateo counties.
