Concord crosswalk stings yield dozens of citations
By Robert Salonga

More than 40 motorists were cited this morning after police stepped up enforcement of drivers who fail to yield for pedestrians using crosswalks.

The enforcement boost came in response to resident complaints and two recent accidents that killed one pedestrian and seriously injured another.

Concord motorcycle officers stationed themselves on Oakland Avenue in front of the city's BART station and at the intersection of Clayton Road and Roslyn Drive.

Police had a plainclothes officer walk across a crosswalk as a decoy to see whether drivers would yield for him. There were plenty of close calls, and those who did not stop despite being in his walking path were quickly chased down and ticketed by motorcycle officers.

Officers issued about 10 citations by the BART station, and at least 30 at the Clayton Road location, where as many as five drivers were cited in a single crossing.

"People drive around here like it's a race track," said Corinne Rippie, who manages the Red Dragon restaurant right in front of the Clayton Road crosswalk that was a target of this morning's enforcement. "They just don't stop."
