BART approves electronic bike lockers
By Denis Cuff

Bay Area Rapid Transit board officials decided today there will be a charge of 3 cents per hour to rent one of 198 new electronic bicycle lockers that will be installed later this year at several stations.

The new lockers, which open and close with the swipe of a pre-paid charge card, are aimed at making lockers more accessible to more people who pedal to stations.

In a related move, the board agreed to a two-tier system of fees to rent 1,000 key-operated bike lockers. These are rented to one person at a time for a year.

The locker fee goes up from $30 to $40 a year at five stations, Pleasant Hill, Ashby, San Leandro, West Oakland, and Dublin-Pleasanton, which have both types of lockers.

The fee remains $30 for year for lockers at other stations.

BART officials said they want to give a financial incentive to people who infrequently use their bikes in the key-operated lockers to switch over to the electronic lockers. The fee changes were approved by the board on a 8-0 vote.
