American Cancels 200 Flights
By Staff
American Airlines grounded most flights that use Boeing MD-80 planes Wednesday, including a half dozen at SFO, Oakland, and Mineta San Jose.
The local cancellations include at least three flights out of San Francisco International, one from Oakland International and three from Mineta San Jose International.
The airline voluntarily canceled the flights so that the planes could undergo wiring inspections, a spokesman said. Those issues are not related to an earlier problem when the Federal Aviation Administration had earlier ordered several older Boeing 737 jetliners grounded because they had missed routine inspections for cracks.
American is the second busiest carrier at SFO, where all of its flights use MD-80s. The three canceled flights were bound for Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas.
Airport spokesman Mike McCarron said affected passengers would be booked on different flights, and that the overall impact at San Francisco International would be small.
The wiring inspections also grounded American flights to Dallas and Chicago at Mineta San Jose. |
