Man gets out of wheelchair, takes hotel van on joyride at SFO
By William Brand

Police at San Francisco International Airport are still trying to figure out why an unidentified man wheeled up in an airport wheelchair to a DoubleTree shuttle, climbed aboard and drove off with passengers still aboard.

Was it St. Patrick's Day exuberance gone amok?

No one knows, but it was an unlikely place for a joy ride.

Airport Duty Manager Mike Towle said the DoubleTree driver was at the rear of the van unloading luggage for passengers, when the hijacker drove off.

The driver watched as the van, with four passengers on boasrd, circled the upper level of the airport twice, when he retuned the second time, the driver started chasing the van, Towle said. "He caught up with the van at Terminal 3. The guy who took the van was gone," he said.

The driver got aboard, returned to Terminal 1 where the episode began, called police and resumed unloading luggage, Towle said.

No one was injured; nothing was stolen, everything's fine, he said. Police are investigating.

  It's a strange world, isn't?

  "You got it," Towle said.
